File Creation and Submission Guidelines
File Types or Software Applications
We recommend you provide flattened .tif or high quality (uncompressed) .jpg files for output. We can also accept files from most popular photo and page design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark XPress, PageMaker and InDesign. Other applications and file types may require additional setup time and costs.
Layout Files
Quark is our preferred layout software and allows you to combine high resolution images along with vector files and type in an efficient manner and is easy to output from.
Vector Files
Our preferred vector file format is Adobe Illustrator. When saving files in vector format (outline format) please convert type to outlines or be sure to include the font. Because vector based programs use mathematical definitions to describe size and shape, file size is usually small and these files can usually be e-mailed quickly. With vector art dpi is only limited by the output device.
Resolution for Large Format Image Files
In most cases the larger the file the better, however, images over 80 MB seldom contribute to the quality of the final output and can dramatically increase processing time. 75 dpi at final print size is adequate for most jobs. A good rule of thumb is to try and have an original source file at 25% of the final output size with 300 - 450 dpi resolution. When small type is used in the layout it is best to create it in a vector based program like Illustrator or a layout program like Quark while linking to the images separately. (Don’t forget to send the linked files along with any fonts required)
CMYK or RGB Color Mode
We can print from either CMYK or RGB image files. While Inkjet and large format printers print in CMYK, RGB has a larger color gamut and our high quality output system will provide the best possible conversion. If using Spot or Pantone colors please indicate when a color match is critical, we will do our best to match it, however some colors are simply not achievable with process inks.
PC and Macintosh
Macintosh is preferred but we support files and can print from both platforms.
